You often hear the saying ‘get out of your comfort zone’ but what is the ‘comfort zone’ exactly and why do we happily stay inside it even if deep down we know it might not be the best place for us to be.

What got me thinking about this is the recent photoshoot we did for this website. When my web designer, Amanda, told me she would need some shots of me, I had imagined a few quick snaps with an iPhone. Little did I know she had a professional photoshoot in mind!

My first reaction was 'NO WAY!' but it got me thinking about this concept of comfort zone, what it really means and how easily it is to fall into its trap

What is a 'Comfort Zone'?

To understand what is inside your comfort zone, a great simple exercise is to draw a circle on a piece of paper.

Everything you are experiencing in your life right now is inside your comfort zone (your circle): your current state of health, your personal fitness, your style of parenting, the friendships you have, your current job, your financial state, and so much more.

Everything you desire in your life, but do not currently have is just outside the circle, and to get it inside you’re probably going to have to do something new or different.

You’re going to have to step outside of your comfort zone.

Just like a ship was not designed for the confines of the safe harbour, neither are human beings. We are designed to sail the wide-open oceans, to push the boundaries of what we can achieve, to unlock the latent potential lying dormant and to discover we really do have the potential from within to reach places we did not even know we were capable of getting to.

How did I do?

I embraced the challenge, decided to enjoy the experience and learn from it.

And you know what? It was fun!
